6 inventions that came up completely by chance

Do you think inventions always come first in idea and later in practice? Not quite: some things in our daily lives were created completely by chance! Check out some of these inventions that came up inadvertently:

1. Cookies

It may not seem like it, but this delicious dessert came by chance: Chef Ruth Graves Wakefield, who lived in Massachusetts (USA) between 1903 and 1977, had a guesthouse in the 1930s where she served chocolate cookies for her guests and guests. In the recipe, cocoa and ground chocolate were added. One day, in the absence of cocoa, she simply put slightly larger pieces of chocolate in the dough and created the traditional cookie we know today. In 1997, the recipe became the official dish of the US state.

2. Superglue

Known in Brazil by the Super Bonder brand, the superglue accidentally emerged from an experiment during World War I. The idea was to create a clear polymer, but a sticky cyanoacrylate-based substance came out. Discarded, it was again used in World War II to stop wounds - something highly inadvisable today. Only in 1951 it was again developed, reaching the product we know today.

3. Potato Chips

George Crum worked as a chef at a Saratoga Springs (USA) restaurant in 1853, and one of his specialties was chips. He made them with thick cuts until one customer complained that they were not tasty and that maybe thinner would look better. Crum made it thinner, but the guy still complained. It was then that he cut into blades and fried over high heat. The result was divine, and the customer ordered several portions. However, these potatoes only became popular in the USA in the late 19th century and, especially, from the 1920s.

4. Supermarket Cart

Sylvan Goldman had a supermarket in Oklahoma City in 1936, and noticed that the baskets bothered customers. Consumers, no matter how much they wanted to get more, would give up when the basket was full. One day he saw a lady putting the heavy basket on the stroller her son was playing with and had the idea of developing the shopping carts that make life easier and make people spend more.

5. Webcam

You may think that every technological item comes after a lot of research and advancement, but the webcam just came from the laziness of its creators. In 1991, researchers at Cambridge University had to walk quite a few corridors until they reached the coffee room, not knowing if the drink was ready or if it was already gone. So they put a camera attached to their computers to remotely monitor the coffee bottle. Then, in 1993, with the advent of the internet, they decided to refine the technique so that anyone could view the coffee room through the world wide web. With that, they eventually developed the webcam.

6. Matchstick

The English pharmacist John Walker was working on his mixtures in 1826 when he ended up stirring a pot of phosphorous liquid with a thin piece of wood. As he removed the stick from the liquid, he noticed phosphoric traces on the end and tried to wipe them off a stone wall. At the time, a flame was produced and Walker noticed that he could have created something. So he developed the invention and started selling matches in his pharmacy - first made with cardboard and later with wood. Together he handed a piece of emery paper that helped produce the flame.
