7 graves that are extraordinarily safe

Have you ever wondered how some dead people are really safe? They are sealed coffins, some under tons of earth or concrete, protected by walls, railings or even in large mausoleums.

But in some cases, the protection is such that if a zombie apocalypse really happened, we wouldn't worry about these 7 possible "undead":

7. Ronnie Van Zant

After Lynyrd singer Skynyrd died in a plane crash in 1977, he was buried in a mausoleum in Orange Park, Florida. The musician rested there peacefully for 23 years, until a vandal broke his grave. To protect Van Zant's remains, his family moved him to a Jacksonville cemetery, and he was buried in a concrete vault.

6. Charlie Chaplin

On March 2, 1978, a few months after his death, Charlie Chaplin's body disappeared from his grave in Switzerland. Some time later, her widow received a phone call demanding money for the return of her husband's corpse. Police launched an investigation and captured the two men responsible. Officers also found Chaplin's body, which was buried in a field. To ensure that this would never happen again, Chaplin's funeral included a reinforced concrete vault.

5. HH Holmes

If you know the story of HH Holmes, considered the first serial killer in the United States, you know that he committed atrocities against the victims he drew to his hotel. After he was executed for his crimes in 1896, Holmes wanted to make sure that his body remained untouched. So he left specific orders for his coffin to be filled with concrete and to stand in an unmarked grave near Philadelphia.

4. Levi Leiter

Co-founder of the Marshall Field department store, Levi Leiter sold his half of the business to fellow Marshall Field and became even richer. When a friend's body was dug up and kidnapped, Levi decided that his family would not suffer the same suffering. He therefore gave specific instructions for his coffin to be encased in a steel beam cage and covered with concrete.

When he learned that a group of thieves were trying to break into the tomb just three months after the funeral, Levi's family hired security for the site.

3. Eva Perón

Although Eva Perón died in 1952, her body had a definite destiny after more than two decades. In 1955, military officers stole their remains when they overthrew the Peronist government. The corpse remained hidden in Milan until it was transferred to Spain, on the farm where Juan Perón was living in exile.

Eva only “returned” to Argentina in 1974, and the government took steps to prevent another theft: the tomb was designed by a bank vault maker and is 6 meters deep.

2. Abraham Lincoln

A decade after Lincoln's death, a Chicago organized crime chief set up a team to steal the body of personality and ransom while the politician's grave was under construction in Springfield, Illinois. The action was thwarted by Secret Service agents, but nonetheless Robert Todd Lincoln, the former president's son, took drastic measures to ensure his family would not be disturbed again. The coffin was placed inside a steel cage and wrapped in concrete.

1. George Pullman

For all the layoffs, wage cuts and exploitation of workers, George Pullman was not, say, a popular man. When he died of a heart attack in 1897, his family became concerned about possible revenge on his former employees. So his heirs buried him in a 2.5-meter-deep, concrete-lined, steel-reinforced grave. For the finishing touch, the casket was covered with asphalt, concrete and steel.

Bonus

Leon Czolgosz

It is simply impossible to exhume the body of Leon Czolgosz, the man who murdered William McKinley, the 25th president of the United States. Fearing that the people who supported Czolgosz would make him a martyr, acid was thrown into his coffin. It is estimated that his body would have liquefied just 12 hours after the burial.
