Underwater Art: Caribbean Sea Houses Over 400 Statues

Visitors to the Caribbean can be pleasantly surprised to dive into the seas of the region. Around the Mujeres Island of Cancun, Mexico, there is a very unusual museum. Visitors cannot enter wearing any clothing: diving suits are required as their exhibitions take place at the bottom of the sea.

The Underwater Museum of Art (MUSA) has a collection of 450 statues made of a porous and neutral PH material, ideal for resisting hundreds of years and especially not polluting the environment or harming the local ecosystem. At eight meters deep, the works end up gaining a special color thanks to the various life forms that find shelter in their pores and shapes.

All the statues were created by the Englishman Jason deCaires Taylor, who, besides being a graduate of the London Institute of Arts, is also a great award-winning diver and water photographer. Apparently, "still life" is not the artist's favorite style.
