With commemorative selfie, prisoners 'inaugurate' communication sector in jail

Prisoners at the Provisional Detention Center in the city of São Vicente, state of São Paulo, "obviously" unlawfully inaugurated "a kind of communication center within their own jail." The makeshift telephone sector was discovered through a selfie published by one of the detainees and posted on the internet.

At least 14 detainees were taken and transferred from unit and 17 cell phones found in magazines

With the publication of the photo, the Secretariat of Penitentiary Administration was able to identify the group. With this communications center, inmates were able to bypass the system responsible for blocking the cellular signal within the Detention Center. This enabled them to communicate abroad using smuggled smartphones inside the prison.

Action dismantled

The Secretariat of Penitentiary Administration was able to find that although the prisoners could not get a cell phone signal to make phone calls, it was possible to connect to the internet eventually, which allowed them to publish the commemorative selfie. At least 14 detainees were taken and transferred from unit and 17 cell phones were found in the magazines.

The Provisional Detention Center of São Vicente, as the name implies, does not house convicts, only provisional prisoners awaiting trial. To prevent new devices from entering the center - being thrown off the highway over the walls - a 16-meter-high screen is being installed to prevent something like this from happening again.
