Meet the wood frog mating ritual, which involves orgies and fights

The animal kingdom is full of curious mating rituals like the mating dance of peacock spiders and kangaroo bacchanals, but wood frogs are not far behind in the fetish. When they wake up from hibernation, these animals begin a frenzied competitive orgy.

Using the puddles that are formed by the melting snow, they meet, and within a few days the males cling to anything that moves ahead. In this way, a desperate attempt to get a chance to cling to the female's back begins.

As soon as a wood frog male reaches a puddle, they start croaking to warn the girls that they are ready and waiting. However, when the frogs arrive in the water, they do not dive headlong into the party. In fact, they are very careful and for a good cause.

When males feel the waves that females produce, they attack her from all directions. If they are not careful, they may end up buried in a pile of frogs kicking and screaming, each trying to push the other out and grab the poor poor woman's back.

Violent and fatal orgy

This crazy mating dance can often hurt or drown a female. Therefore, when frogs feel the flickers in the water, they often run desperately away from them. This behavior - along with all the push and shove violent sex - ensures that only the largest and fastest males can reproduce.

The goal of the crazy orgy is to get to the frog's back and stay there, pinning its paws under theirs in a mating position known as the "amplexos." The male can stay that way for up to 24 hours, expelling sperm while the female releases the eggs.
