There are several disadvantages when living in space. One of the most essential is the lack of oxygen, followed by the lack of liquid water. When working on the International Space Station orbiting our planet, it is necessary to reuse all possible resources - this includes the astronauts' own pee.

Through a complex purification process, they can turn urine into drinking water again - and several times. Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield made a short video to explain this.

Space Groceries

A few years ago, packets of water and food were regularly brought to astronauts. Today, they have equipment capable of renewing 93% of their urine. They even say that the liquid they drink is much cleaner than many of the water bottles we drink here on Earth.

The distiller system consists of centrifuges that purify all water and return it in ready-to-drink bags. This makes the International Space Station a virtually self-contained environment - which is absolutely necessary when away from Earth. Check out the video in more detail by Chris Hadfield:
