World Mosquito Day: What We Know About The Diseases They Transmit

On August 20, 1897, the British physician Sir Ronald Ross discovered that females of the Anopheles mosquito, known in Brazil as the capuchin mosquito, are capable of transmitting malaria to humans. This discovery earned him the Nobel Prize in Physiology in 1902 and caused more and more diseases transmitted by these insects to be discovered.

Because of this, on August 20 is celebrated World Mosquito Day, to remind us of the importance of fighting these little pests. Here in Brazil, they have caused outbreaks of dengue, zika and chikungunya. Worldwide, more than 1 million people die each year from mosquito-borne diseases. Let's learn a little more about them?
