They filled the hall of an art gallery with 100 giant human skulls

If you saw the image above and were soon wondering that - finally - you found evidence that some kind of giant humans dominated the earth before we, mini earthlings, came here, know that it's nothing like that! The skulls are part of an exhibition developed by Australian artist Ron Mueck, a guy we talked about here at Mega Curioso and made famous thanks to his impressive hyper-realistic sculptures.

Macabre Stacks

This time, the artist decided to produce a collection of 100 skulls (hyper-realistic, of course) made of fiberglass and resin and measuring about one meter each. The skulls are stacked and sprawled in one of the halls of the National Gallery of Victoria - a famous museum and art gallery in Melbourne, Australia - and the exhibition is named after Mass .

To create the skulls, Mueck first sculpted the pieces meticulously in clay, and then created, created molds to make the copies. However, each of the heads received the finishing touches and hand finishing by the artist, meaning that at the end of the process, neither skull is the same as the other. Thus, there are skulls with more teeth than others, while others look more decayed or look bigger than the others.

It was a monumental piece of work and the most curious thing is that the exhibition was set up in a hall occupied with 17th and 18th century European paintings - and they are in stark contrast to the figures of lusty and snobbish lords and ladies portrayed in the paintings, reminiscent of the all no one escapes from death.

Mueck, who is originally from Melbourne, was actually one of 100 artists from 32 different countries who were invited by the gallery's curators to create special exhibits to celebrate the museum's triennium - which began on December 15 and is expected to last until April 18 next year.
