What was this "monstrosity" that appeared in New Zealand?

Turn and move, the ocean presents us with strange things that it brings from the depths and deposits on some beach of the world. We at Mega Curioso have even talked about some of these bizarre "giveaways" around here, such as the 4-meter creature that appeared in Mexico, the sinister creature found in Japan, something like a mermaid discovered in the England and the sea monster found in New Zealand.

And speaking of New Zealand, one of its beaches - Muriwai's on the west coast of North Island - has become the scene of yet another weird apparition. According to Bec Crew of Science Alert portal, the "thing" you saw in the image that opens this story was found last Friday (9), and many curious (mega) went there to check out the sea monster. .

Mystery

According to Bec, the "creature" was discovered by a woman named Melissa Doubleday - who clicked a bunch of photos and posted everything on Facebook to see if anyone could identify what it was. Melissa said that due to the stench, she even thought it was the carcass of a whale. But as she drew closer, she realized that she was facing something with long tentacles covered by what she described as "shelled worms."

Of course, the post caught the eye, and many people opined about the creature's origin, suggesting that it could be a Rastafarian whale, a dreadlocked sea monster, a Maori canoe, and even an alien time capsule. The most interesting - or scary - is that there is even a little video in which such "shell worms" can be seen moving! Look what a weird thing:

However, as with most mysterious creatures that appear on the beaches, this monster above is not that ... monstrous. According to the staff of the New Zealand Society of Marine Sciences, it is most likely that instead of being a marine animal (or alien!), What was discovered is a piece of wood covered with pets.

More precisely, scientists suspect that the animals are crustaceans of the order Pedunculata, probably of the species Lepas anatifera . These organisms feed by filtering water and usually swim freely through the ocean in their larval phase. However, when they reach maturity, they settle on rigid surfaces such as rocks, ship hulls or, what seems to have been the case now, pieces of wrecked vessels.

Still on the animals of the species Lepas anatifera, they attach themselves through structures called peduncles and can measure up to 80 centimeters in length. Also, when they cling to some solid surface, they never “take off” from there, and if that surface ends up on a beach, unless the piece is quickly returned to the bottom of the sea, crustaceans end up cooking under the sun. Unfortunately, that was the fate of the animals you saw moving in the video.

[UPDATE]

Look what a cool thing! Rogério Soares, one of our readers, sent to the newsroom here of Mega Curioso an image he recorded on Torres beach in Rio Grande do Sul, which shows a "monstrosity" similar to what appeared in New Zealand. According to Rogério, in the case of the Brazilian sea monster, it was a trunk covered by the same animals that we described above. Check out:

That was the marine alien clicked by our reader in Rio Grande do Sul!

By the way, in the name of the writing here of Mega Curioso, thank you for sending the image, Rogério!
