Obesity Can Be Treated With Brain Implant

Treatments for obesity have improved over time and the disease is increasingly seen as an epidemic. If you are overweight and cannot lose weight even after trying various methods and even medications, new studies on this subject may be helpful.

A survey recently published in The Journal of Neuroscience points out as a possible means of treating obesity a brain implant, which works by a kind of pacemaker and sends electrical signals to specific brain areas. These stimuli are capable of causing the same feeling of satiety as after eating too much.

At least that's what was observed in mice in the first tests. The authors of the study are excited about the results and guarantee that once the experiment is applied to humans, it could become a form of obesity treatment.

The technique is to deeply stimulate the entire brain region in order to reach the pleasure and reward areas. Scientists already warn that this kind of stimulus is actually a treatment for obesity, not a cure, as it helps regulate factors that cause people to overeat.

If you think deep brain stimulation treatments are too absurd to come true, be aware that this type of method is already used in Parkinson's patients. It is hoped that this therapy may also be used to control other illnesses such as depression, obsessive compulsive disorder and anorexia.

Remember that these treatments work while the patient is with the implant. In the case of rats, the food craving returned as soon as the structure was removed. So, would you risk it?
