Post pigeons really exist and can be trained by anyone

Pigeons are heroic birds that travel great distances and were used as messengers for centuries - especially before Christ, as entire cities communicated with the aid of these birds. In Syria and Persia cities sent messages in this way, avoiding long messenger walks that could take a long time to reach or risk crossing with assailants. Pigeons did manage to carry the messages, but sometimes got lost when they entered unfamiliar terrain.

Unemployed Pigeons

Today, thanks to the advancement of technologies, this is no longer necessary, as the training of these flying animals is somewhat painful. Although true carrier pigeons are very rare (and quite different from the pigeons we see in cities), the most common birds can also be trained for this type of work. Here are some instructions on how to create your own carrier pigeons, according to the E-How website:

  • 1 - Pigeons are birds that are fond of their owners, so you need to spend time with them daily to get used to you.
  • 2 - You must have adequate accommodation for these birds. The place should be very airy, but without drafts, preferably in a high place of the house - such as the attic or something similar.
  • 3 - Start training your pigeons by getting them used to their travels by carrying them in baskets for at least an hour or two a day. Leave them in these spaces until they realize it's normal.
  • 4 - Take the carrier pigeons about one kilometer away from your home on the first flight. Release them and wait for them at home patiently (as in the attic we said or in another space you created). When they arrive, reward them with small foods. If they don't, well, you already know that they have no talent for service.
  • 5 - Gradually increase flight distances home by approximately one kilometer on each attempt. When the distance is over 10 miles, start releasing the pigeons in pairs or alone and no longer in groups - they should become more independent.
  • 6 - Increase the distance to 70 miles, which is a good distance for the carrier pigeons to make their first trip. Some races can fly hundreds of miles if they know the paths, but they must be properly prepared (healthy and well rested).
  • 7 - Finally, attach the messages to the little legs of the pigeons in small capsules. And that's it, after a few months of training and hours of dedication, you can now take the first test. We just hope the homing pigeon finds the right way.

According to the E-How website, these are some of the procedures required to turn mere pigeons into carrier pigeons. And you, will you want to train some pigeons? Or is it even better to surrender to the practicalities of the modern world and just send an email?
