According to the Daily News NY, a study by New York City City Hall found that 40% of all calls made to 911 police service were accidental. According to the survey, 4 million inadvertent calls - known as "butt calls" - were made by citizens without even realizing it.

Many of these calls occur while mobile phones are carried in the back pockets of citizens, purses or wallets, causing police to move to where the calls came from. In 2010 alone, there were approximately 10, 700 such calls per day, and service operators waste a lot of time trying to determine if anyone really needs assistance.

Due to the large increase in calls made by the backside, New York City has decided to order the study and intends to launch an awareness campaign so that the service can be optimized.
