Electric Only in 2060: Senate Discusses Combustion Vehicle Ban

Brazilian senators are discussing a crucial topic on Monday to minimize the country's environmental impact. The Environment Commission (CMA) will hold a public hearing at 2 pm to discuss PLS 454/2017, which prohibits the marketing and circulation of fossil fuel-powered vehicles from 2060.

The proposal was made by Telmário Mota (Pros), senator from the state of Roraima. This Sustainable Logistics Plan (PLS) aims to gradually reduce the commercialization of fossil combustion vehicles and, consequently, the consumption of these fuels until 2060 - when circulation and trade will be permanently closed.

The project begins to interfere in the market from 2030, when 90% of the vehicles sold may have self-propelled traction by fossil combustion engine and this percentage increase over the following decades. The vehicle fraction will decrease considerably by 2050, when only 10% of commercial vehicles can be combustion powered.

Invited to the PLS debate were the president of the Brazilian Association of Electric Vehicles (ABVE), Ricardo Guggisberg; Henry Joseph Jr., technical director of the National Association of Automotive Vehicle Manufacturers (Anfavea) and the president of the Brazilian Association of Manufacturers and Importers of Mopeds and Similars (Abrafics), Maurício Siqueira Francisco.

In addition to this, representatives of the Energy Research Company, the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovations and Communications, and a representative of the Brazilian Association of Importing Companies and Manufacturers of Automotive Vehicles (Abeifa) will also be present.

Getting into fashion

With the advancement of this PLS, Brazil follows the example of European countries - such as Germany - of changing the car market for the environment. Undoubtedly a very important step to introduce these vehicles in Brazil and reduce the emission of harmful pollutants to the planet.

Recently, TecMundo presented a story demystifying electric vehicle engines, more present than ever in North America and Europe. Knowing concepts about this technology - which is not new but has become viable in recent years - is important for the popularization of these trending vehicles around the world.
