SpaceX says cross-country travel rocket will be ready in 10 years

SpaceX presented a very interesting idea last year: Elon Musk's company plans to use the technology already applied to its space travel rockets in a project that could take passengers on routes such as London and Dubai in just 29 minutes. Then the announcement in September didn't talk much about it, until this week Chief Operating Officer Gwynne Shotwell assured that this would be possible "within a decade, for sure."

Ticket prices on transoceanic voyages would be slightly higher than those currently practiced by business classes on airplanes, but would not exceed four digits.

“This will definitely happen, ” he promised at a TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design) conference in Vancouver. According to the executive, it is expected that during this period the company will also be able to use this same program to travel to Mars. The idea is to have a very large propeller, capable of flying like a 100-person aircraft and at a much higher speed than an airplane.

Gwynne commented that this vehicle should complete its travels on average between 30 and 40 minutes and that it would land in an area five to ten kilometers away from the center of the embarkation and disembarkation points. The price of tickets would be between those currently practiced in the economy and business class and the value of transoceanic tickets would not exceed four digits. “But you would do it (the trip) in just one hour, ” he explains.

But how can the cost be relatively low that way? According to Gwynne, rockets could operate on the same route a dozen times a day, while a plane travels long distances, usually once a day. She has not given much detail about safety, seat design and other amenities, but is confident that from the next decade travel time will be much shorter. “I personally invested in it because I travel a lot and I don't like to travel. I would love to see my clients in Riyadh leaving in the morning and come back in time to make dinner. ”
