TecMundo Interview: MC Mayara talks about career, feminism and new clip

Some may believe that YouTube is a simple platform for passing time, but it goes far beyond that. The service is an incredible tool for the exercise of democracy and proves to be an excellent channel for the propagation of alternative cultures that for various reasons would never find space in mainstream media.

This article opens a new framework at TecMundo - from now on, we will be conducting periodic interviews with successful YouTube personalities and building a career through this tool. To start this series, we invite no less than singer MC Mayara to chat with us about her work.

We talked about her earlier here on the site. The artist's latest video, “Ai Como I'm Bandida Two”, reached over 1 million views in less than a month of existence on YouTube. Although many people saw the video as just another “hilarious joke”, the truth is that the production refers in a funny way to the social movements defended by the young woman - with emphasis, of course, on feminism.

Career and daily life

According to the singer herself, already at the age of nine Mayara liked to sing carioca funk and always received support from friends and family to follow this artistic life. “It was YouTube that leveraged my career. When I became MC, I started going to clubs and met the eletrofunk, ”he comments. According to the curitibana, her main difficulty at the time was to convince her manager that she was already 18 years old and could work.

Mayara is optimistic when asked whether traditional media - which has always remained limited to delivering more conservative content - is opening up to this new musical rhythm. “A lot of people do electrofunk. Anitta, Naldo and Ludmilla, for example, just changed their name to funk pop. But it's the same eletrofunk we've been doing for a long time, ”he says.

And don't think the artist's routine is easy. Music and video recordings are always done on Mondays and Tuesdays, while shows are usually on weekends. Harmonizing her professional life, Mayara also needs to take care of Manuella, her daughter born last year. “I think I can reconcile well. At the moment I'm not involved with anyone, I don't want a serious relationship because I want to settle my life first. ”

“We have no more freedom of expression”

Although her songs usually address topics much discussed in feminism - especially women's sexual freedom - the artist says she “does not consider herself 100% feminist, ” as she disagrees, for example, with the legalization of abortion. Regarding the fans, Mayara states that they do not cause her problems and that she is always willing to serve them to the best of her ability.

Everyone has their sexuality. The important thing is to explain that things happen at the right age.

We also asked the singer about a recent project that was successful on the web: the mobile game Galaxy Pika, which would be released for Android and iOS platforms, but was rejected in both operating system stores because of erotic content. “We don't have freedom of expression anymore, right? It's already written that it's a game for people over 18, it's not my fault if a minor goes there and low, ”he says.

Taking advantage of the subject, it is worth noting that the funkeira sees no problem in children listening and singing carioca funk, as long as they are educated by their parents. “My daughter listens to my songs and I don't see any problems with that, because I don't do such heavy lyrics. Everyone has their sexuality, but nobody admits it. The important thing is to explain that things happen at the right age. ”

A serious message in a humorous format

Regarding her latest hit on the web, the video “Oh, I'm a thug Two, ” Mayara says the idea was to bring together all the social causes that the singer usually addresses in her songs (such as the struggles against machismo, racism and homophobia) and convey that message in a humorous way. “Nowadays people pay more attention to humorous things, ” explains the artist.

A lot of people hated it because they don't understand the context of the clip.

Although the young woman is pleased with the reception of the video, she regrets that many netizens did not understand the message of the production. “A lot of people hated it because they don't understand the context of the clip, they don't understand that we are fighting against prejudice and they think we just want to draw attention. They do not understand, for example, that lightning symbolizes the sexual liberation of women, ”he explains.

And the “repressed” ones to hold on to: the criticism doesn't seem to shake the Curitiba MC, which even told us about its professional plans for the coming months. The idea is to make a sequence of seven videos, and the next will illustrate the song Dia de Bold (recorded in partnership with Dz Mc's) and the third will refer to the song “7 Deadly Sins”. Mayara's warning goes: "It's gonna be a bite."
