Tokyo is the best city in the world to live in 2015, survey says

5. Sydney, Australia

4. Melbourne, Australia

3. Berlin, Germany

2. Vienna, Austria

1. Tokyo, Japan

This week, British magazine Monocle published a ranking of 2015's “Best Cities to Live For”. Japan's capital, Tokyo, was the big winner of the review, which had new criteria measured in this issue. For example, this year the survey took into account the number of public bookstores available and the number of international connecting routes that pass through cities, linking them with the rest of the world.

The Japanese city, which has about 13.3 million people, was in second place in the 2014 ranking, which influenced the result of this edition not surprising as much. As for the second and third place, the same cannot be said.

The Austrian capital Vienna, which ranked second in the 2015 survey, was sixth in 2014. Not only the good street conditions, but also the excellent conservation of its parks were the points that, when taken into account, became responsible for change.

In third place was Berlin, the capital of Germany, rising a surprising 11 places over the previous year. The reason for the result of the German city, besides being a reference in art and culture, is that it has a low monthly cost for travel. At this point, the magazine argued that the differential of the major cities evaluated is mainly the ability to welcome visitors with the same quality of life as their citizens.

Other cities that surprised, but on the negative side, were London and New York. Both did not even rank among the top 25 cities ranked by the survey. The only American city to appear on the British magazine's list was Portland, Oregon, which ranked 25th.

Completing the Top 5 of the Best Cities to Live in are Australian Melbourne and Sydney, also renowned for their great quality of life. Their high ranking is due to the many hours of sunlight they have per year and the numerous seaside locations they have.

This edition was the first time that there was a categorization by the level of freedom that citizens possess. Along with the points mentioned at the beginning of the text and 19 other criteria, according to the publication, this issue caused the biggest turnaround in the ranking since it began production in 2007.
