Fun video shows Disney's 12 basics of animation

The 1981 book The Illusion of Life: Disney Animation brings together the animation techniques used by Walt Disney Studios in the 1930s. In it, renowned animators - like Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston - described each of the basics that the American studio used to make the characters look more realistic.

As might be expected, the book has inspired many animation enthusiasts. And Italian designer and animator Cento Lodigiani was one of the people who was inspired by the book to produce a video and a series of GIFs that illustrate the 12 basics of the American studio.

The techniques value the movement of characters, give a sense of weight as the object moves in space, bring a touch of charisma or even exaggeration for different situations. Lodigiani's job was to revisit these principles and turn them into a video and 12 GIFs that bring the techniques to life.

“The 12 basic principles of animation were developed by Walt Disney Studios 'elders'. ... Of course, they were not elders at the time, but young people who were facing incredible discoveries and who were contributing to the development of a new art form. These principles are the result of reflection on Disney's practice and desire to use animation to express character and personality, ”explains the designer.
