According to a report released by the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) website, at least one third of all marine species on our planet remain unknown to humans.

According to the publication, to arrive at this estimate, a group of researchers has compiled a compilation of all known species - and listed in open access databases - with the help of 270 experts from around the world, concluding that there are probably one million of species inhabiting the oceans, but no more.

Of the known creatures, 226, 000 have already been described in some study, and another 65, 000 are currently being studied. Researchers believe that the majority of undiscovered species are mollusks, worms, small crustaceans and sponges, and the study will provide a more detailed picture of the conservation landscape and the rate of extinction of some animals.
