The Dark Knight has been fully active against crime for over 60 years, and there are some facts surrounding this trajectory as obscure as the hero's personality. The folks at io9 decided to investigate Batman's past, discovering a series of episodes that Bruce Wayne would surely love to erase if he could. Check out some of them:

Batman was almost a sadistic serial killer!

At the beginning of his career, the Hooded Crusader did not show as much pity for his enemies as he does today. So much so that he tired of throwing, kicking and punching countless wrongdoers to death. And between one henchman and another, the shadowy hero melted some in acid tanks, hung others with ropes, and even broke several small necks.

Batman met with Adolf Hitler

Although the Shadow Detective had not fought many Nazis in his career, he even met the most iconic of them - no less than Adolf Hitler - during World War II. Together with Superman and the Prodigy Boy, Batman appears throwing tennis balls at a poster with the faces of war supervillains.

Gotham City almost really existed

In the 1960s, Joseph F. Lewis, a wealthy lawyer from Sunnyvale, a city located in Silicon Valley, California, almost convinced the city council to rename the city as Gotham City. Lewis was the owner of a themed nightclub called Wayne Mansion - entitled to dancers dressed in Batgirl and Catwoman, as well as distinctive decor - and believed the new name could help revitalize the city center.

The Prodigy Boy Became More Famous Than Expected

When the creator of the character, Bob Kane, suggested Robin's presence in one of the comic book editions, the publisher of the series went against the idea of portraying a boy facing gangsters. However, after the magazine hit newsstands, sales were twice as high as editions containing only the Night's Owner. This is how the Prodigy Boy eventually won his place as Batman's faithful partner.

Catwoman wasn't as hot as she is today

Originally, some of Batman's enemies looked much more animalistic, and Catwoman, one of Batman's most "admired" enemies, was one such figure. So much so that at the beginning of her career she didn't appear dressed in the super-tight clothes we see today, just covered her whole face with a furry cat mask.
