1 - Did you know that your baptismal name was Farrokh Bulsara? The artist legally changed his name to Freddie Mercury around 1970, when the band Queen formed.

Despite all his resourcefulness on stage, Freddie Mercury was incredibly shy and rarely gave interviews.

3 His favorite artists were Jimi Hendrix and Aretha Franklin, and Freddie Mercury was an avid stamp collector.

4 - It is said that once Freddie Mercury helped Princess Diana dress up as a man so she could go out with the Queen members unrecognized.

Although Freddie Mercury was voted one of the leading Britons in a BBC poll - he was ranked 59 out of 100 - the artist was not born in the UK, but in Zanzibar, off the coast of Tanzania.

6 - Before becoming a music star, Freddie Mercury worked at London's Heathrow Airport.

7. When a reporter asked him about the meaning of the iconic song "Bohemian Rhapsody, " Freddie Mercury replied that the lyrics had no meaning whatsoever and were just a bunch of nonsense gathered to rhyme.

8 - Did you know that Kurt Cobain mentioned Freddie Mercury in his suicide letter? Cobain reportedly wrote that he admired and envied Mercury's ability to present himself to his audience and accept all the love and adoration shown by the fans.

9 - Freddie Mercury had a long love relationship with a girl named Mary Austin in the 1970s - and she was the artist who left her home and much of her fortune as well as making her the royalties of his songs.

Mercury has even written several songs about Mary - the most famous of which is Love of my Life.

Speaking of songs, Freddie composed the song “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” while relaxing in a hotel bathtub.

12 - Freddie Mercury began a serious relationship with Jim Hutton in 1985, five years before Hutton discovered he was HIV positive.

13 - Hutton lived with Mercury until his death in November 1991, took care of the artist until the end and was by his side when Freddie passed away.

14 - Mercury chose not to make his condition public to protect those closest to the harassment of the press, and only disclosed that he had HIV through a note on the day of his death. The band members and close friends knew what artist he had long before he passed away.
