Authorities find ghost boats with bodies in Japan Sea

The Japan Coast Guard has been making a series of frightening discoveries over the past two months. At least 11 vessels with bodies were found in the seas near the island, according to information from the country's communication network, NHK.

One of the boats appeared to have a piece of a North Korean flag, and another had inscriptions that refer to the “Korean Population Army, ” nomenclature for the country's armed forces. According to maritime expert Yoshihiko Yamada, the suspicion is that the vessels are from state deserters and have stopped in Japan due to their characteristics. “They are old, heavy and made of wood. They are not fast, and their engines have no power to steer boats through the ocean currents, ”he said in an interview with NHK.

According to information from The Huffington Post, another expert, Jun Okumura, reinforces the thesis that they are deserter vessels and points out an important fact. "This is the best explanation, and as many cases occurred in sequence, it suggests that there is serious instability off the coast of North Korea, " he said.

Inside the boats there were at least 25 bodies, in an advanced state of decomposition. This and the deteriorating conditions of the vessels reinforce the authorities' suspicion that they have been drifting for a long time. Among the remains found, two bodies were beheaded and on one of the boats were six skulls.

Some of the vessels shown by the NHK report had fishing equipment such as nets, hooks, squid lures and other accessories. This may also indicate the possibility that they were carrying fishermen and ended up facing problems on the high seas.

The Japanese authorities are still investigating to find out the true origin of the boats, what their fate would be, who the dead people were actually found inside and what happened to them.
