Giant pink condom strengthens fight against AIDS

A giant pink condom was placed on Friday at an Sydney obelisk in Australia as part of an AIDS awareness campaign. The 18-meter-high condom was placed in the obelisk in downtown Hyde Park.

Nicholas Parkhill of the AIDS Council of New South Wales (ACON) campaign director recalled that while there are new drugs to fight HIV, the AIDS virus, condom use remains key to fighting the disease.

Wendy Francis of the Australian Christian Lobby organization, a Christian group, in turn, regretted the condom display in an inappropriate place open to children. In 2013, 1, 235 new cases of HIV were diagnosed in Australia, the highest number in the last 20 years.
