There are foods and appetizers that most of us love and eat often. However, some of these products contain chemicals in their composition that can do us very, very badly. The folks at GRATED have posted a list of these foods, and you might be surprised by some of them below:

Almonds and Cashews

Rich in protein and essential oils, almonds are also rich in a well-known poison: cyanide. This is why they are only marketed after they have been roasted or cooked. Even seeds sold as "raw" have gone through heating processes to nullify the effect of toxins. Cashews also go through the same process as they are rich in a lethal toxin called urushiol.

Apple seeds

Not that people usually eat the seeds of apples, but if they were eaten in large quantities - such as when we indulge in peanut charms, for example - they could cause death. These little seeds are also stuffed with cyanide!

Nutmeg

There are several recipes that include a pinch of this well-known spice, and as long as the dosage is kept in small amounts, eating nutmeg causes no major problems. However, this product is rich in a substance called myristin, which causes hallucinations, nausea, headaches, and acceleration of the heart rate when consumed in amounts greater than just a few grams.

Cherries

The fruits themselves are only bad when consumed in very high quantities, which is usually not the case. However, the danger itself is in the stem of the cherry, which is extremely toxic. This small structure is rich in hydrogen cyanide, which can cause dizziness, nausea and headaches with just one bite. Larger doses of this toxin can cause breathing difficulties, kidney failure, seizures and even death.

Potatoes

Yeah! Have you ever wondered if this food might be bad for you, especially while devouring a delicious portion of chips? Both the leaves, the stem and the potato itself can be toxic, even fatal. Fortunately, not all of them are hazardous, but those with green spots or buds.

Mushrooms

Mushrooms are very popular and are used in the preparation of numerous dishes. However, although there are approximately 38, 000 different species, about 5% are toxic, with some varieties even fatal. The problem is that it is difficult to differentiate an edible mushroom from a poisonous one, so never consume those found in nature!

Although some of these mushrooms contain toxins that can cause strong hallucinations, others have toxins such as alpha-amanitine, which causes severe liver damage when ingested.
