German highway has 'cables' that carry moving electric trucks

Germany is testing a different road: looking up, the driver is faced with a series of equipment that has no use for ordinary vehicles. The cables serve to charge electric trucks while they are moving - and are a government bet to reduce carbon emissions.

The technology is called eHighway and involves special vehicles with top conductor rods to receive electricity; For this, it must be less than 90 km / h. The special stretch of road is near Frankfurt, 9.6 km long and was inspired by the electric train lines. During the journey in this sector, the truck can only run using electricity. When the road is over, he needs to go back to the hybrid engine, but already with the battery recharged.

The video below explains how the project works and one of its possibilities: connecting industrial hubs and ports, while maximizing alternative fuel sources. According to the company, up to 20 thousand euros in fuel can be saved for every 100 thousand kilometers traveled.

In all, 14 million euros were invested in the project, which is in the testing phase by 2022, and another 70 million in the development of the refill truck. If approved, the road should be extended to more points in the country.
