4 curious cases of people smuggling

1 - The child who was discovered in a suitcase in Spain

In the middle of last year, police guarding the border between Morocco and the northern African city of Ceuta, which is owned by Spain, were looking at the screens of their scanners (which reveal what is carried in their luggage) when they noticed something very peculiar. See the following image:

The suitcase above was being carried by a woman trying to enter Spanish territory with an 8-year-old boy named Adou Quattara. Authorities found that it was actually the child's father, a man named Ali Quattara, who set the whole thing up and paid his wife to cross the border. The intention is to reunite Adou, who lived in Ivory Coast, with his mother, who lived legally in the Canary Islands.

2 - The man who hid his wife in the luggage

In early 2015, police guarding the border between Poland and Belarus had the flea behind their ears after noticing a man traveling by train with a giant suitcase. Investigating the case, the officers discovered that it was a French citizen who was trying to enter France with his Russian wife in the luggage. Check out the couple being escorted by the officers:

The pair feared that because the Russian woman did not have a European passport, she would be barred from entering France. However, according to the authorities, the whole scheme was in vain, as it would be enough for the couple to prove their marital status so that the woman could enter the country freely. In addition, the two could have been sentenced to three years in prison for trying to evade border control - but were released after interrogation.

3 - The woman who was caught with her baby in the backpack

In March last year, Jenifer Pavolaurea, a 25-year-old nursing student, was caught in the Philippines when airport police discovered she was trying to leave the country with a clandestine baby in her backpack. The girl was to board for Papua New Guinea, her home country, and the child was her son - only 2 months old. See below:

In fact, Jenifer had already extrapolated her stay as a tourist in the Philippines and admitted that she did not have the necessary documents to file for immigration and legally leave with the baby. After being questioned by the authorities, mother and son were released to travel.

4 - The man who hid in the car seat

In 2001, a Mexican named Enrique Aquilar Canchola was caught trying to enter the US illegally. So far, no news, right? However, what caught the authorities' attention was the way Enrique intended to cross the border. Unlike most Mexicans who try to go to Uncle Sam's land and pay middlemen - or the previous cases who used suitcases and backpacks - here's what the guy did:

Yes, dear reader, Enrique hid inside the seat of the car - and made himself a seat! - but was eventually arrested while attempting to enter the United States through the city of San Ysidro, California, which at the time was the most tumultuous border in the world.
