(Reuters) - The city of Rio de Janeiro has joined the World Heritage list in the urban cultural landscape category, according to the city's tourism secretary.

The city's bid was launched in 2009 by the Institute of National Historical and Artistic Heritage (Iphan)

According to City Hall, the choice of Rio de Janeiro as a World Heritage Site was approved during the 37th Session of the World Heritage Committee in St. Petersburg, Russia, on Sunday.

"The city is a pride for its people and a passion for every tourist who visits it, " said tourism secretary Pedro Guimarães in a statement. “Deservedly there was the official recognition of his affectionate nickname Wonderful City, ” he added.

Christ the Redeemer, one of the most valuable tourist spots in the city, had already been chosen one of the seven wonders of the modern world in another vote.

With the title given this Sunday, UNESCO will promote actions for the preservation of the city's cultural heritage. In addition to Christ the Redeemer, the list includes Sugar Loaf Mountain, Tijuca Forest, Flamengo Aterro, the Botanical Garden, the famous Copacabana Beach and other noble spots in the city.
