Researchers deny that object sighted in Rio de Janeiro was a meteor

According to a report published by the G1, last Sunday (17) a strange object was sighted across the sky of the Rio de Janeiro Metropolitan Region. According to the publication, nearly 20 readers contacted the newsroom, sending several videos and photos of a supposed meteor.

As you can see in the video above, posted on YouTube, the alleged star seems to move from top to bottom, leaving a visible trail of fire and smoke as he passes. Although the National Institute for Space Research prefers not to comment on the origin of the object, after analyzing one of the images of the event one of the institution's researchers even commented that it could be a meteor.

Supposed meteor

However, after checking the videos sent to the G1 newsroom by the readers, the same researcher ruled out the possibility that it was a meteor, because, as he explained, these objects usually move at much higher speeds than that observed in Rio de Janeiro. January.

Already astronomer Fernando Roig - from the National Observatory - consulted by the publication, believes that the most plausible theory is that the object was an airplane, because, according to reports, the passage took between 5 and 10 minutes. Also, as the so-called meteor was spotted later in the day, it is likely that the sun's reflection gave the trail the reddish hue that can be seen in the images.

The astronomer also explained that when an aircraft is at a height when the air is very cold and dry, the hot and humid air coming out of the turbines is rapidly condensed, forming a trail of smoke similar to what was observed. And you, reader, have any guess about the mysterious object that was sighted in Rio de Janeiro?
