Resort in Mongolia Has Lotus Shaped Architecture

In the middle of the Gobi Desert, in Inner Mongolia, in the Xiang Sha Wan region, lies the curious Desert Lotus Resort, a beautiful architectural project that uses low environmental impact materials to create an amazing visual structure.

The resort is made up of white tents arranged at triangular angles that connect in a large circle, which together creates the design of a lotus flower.

The model is based on a Chinese concept of "zhen", which means the art of repeating the same elements. The resort is all built with low carbon materials and is powered by green and sustainable energy such as solar and wind. Made of a steel skeleton with prefabricated sand-fixed panels, the resort integrates construction with landscape in an environmentally friendly and self-contained design.

The resort offers its guests a range of recreational activities such as camel riding, sand skiing and even a desert surfing sport. The mythical orange sand dunes, which make the Xiang Sha Wan region famous, draw many tourists. Another local attraction is the Hantai River, a tributary of the Yellow River over 200 kilometers wide.

Winters in the Mongolian desert are cold and dry, and snowfall is frequent. The other seasons are very hot and arid, and the heat generates dangerous storms in the region. Tourism in the region and maintenance of the Desert Lotus Resort became possible only because the project included sustainable technologies for on-site water and energy supply.
