The Statue of Liberty is a must see destination for every tourist visiting New York in the United States. Officially called “The Freedom That Illuminates the World, ” she enchants with its blue-green color. However, did you know that this was not the original color in the monument?

A video from the American Chemical Society tells some of the changes the statue has undergone since it was presented by the French in 1885. In the early decades, it sported a beautiful copper tan, its external material. Then it turned brown until it finally turned blue.

These changes were due to oxidation and pollution. Now these chemical reactions have reached stability, so the statue has been in the same shade for several years. Some time ago, the idea of ​​restoring the original color of the monument even rolled over, but many New Yorkers protested against this, and the proposal was shelved.

Since the Statue of Liberty is made of copper, this was its original color, which gradually oxidized to blue-green.
