Strong scenes: Rugby athlete gets quadriplegic after dangerous play

Every sport has its good and bad times. Often players take risks but manage to get away without any scratch. Unfortunately, this is not the story the Australian media is following right now.

Newcastle Knights professional rugby player Alex McKinnon is just 22 years old and a week ago suffered a serious fracture during a tackle in a match against the Melbourne Storm. The strong images were recorded on local television and show the moment when the athlete falls after a dangerous move.

The player was promptly treated and was induced to coma after the diagnosis indicated that he had broken two vertebrae. McKinnon underwent emergency surgery to remove the vertebrae and insert a metal plate to keep the remaining vertebrae in place.
