According to National Geographic, researchers at the University of Cape Town in South Africa have developed a drug that can cure malaria with a single dose, killing the resistant parasite that causes the disease instantly.

Current treatments are based on the administration of numerous drugs against which the malaria parasite has already become resistant. The new drug, on the other hand, has been extremely effective, and animal testing over the past 18 months has shown that this drug does not appear to have any side effects.

Human trials should begin late next year, and if treatment is approved, the new superdrug has the potential to help control or even eradicate the disease. In addition, according to the researchers, about 24% of child deaths in sub-Saharan Africa could be prevented with the drug, while millions of people worldwide could be treated annually.
