Jeddah Tower: Future 'World's Largest Building' Will Be 1km Tall [Gallery]

Humanity, with time and the advancement of technology, increasingly seems to want to win the skies and take over the heights. The ambition has been on many occasions throughout history, and even today is to build the tallest building in the world. This has happened to many projects. Some finished, such as the current brand owner, Burj Khalifa of Dubai, in the UAE, and others that got in the way, like the 10 we listed here in Mega Curioso.

Again, a project is billed as the “future tallest building in the world, ” intended to rise from a thousand meters, about 170 meters higher than Burj Khalifa. Scheduled for completion in 2018, the building is located in the city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The investment will be US $ 2.2 billion (R $ 8.3 billion), which, according to the Saudi government, is already secured to finalize the city's works, including the new tower.

The project was developed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture. In an interview with The Guardian this year, company officials admitted that they used details of the architectural language of the Dubai building, such as the foundation moat and the surrounding towers. “His specific form comes from more of a new trend that is likely to spread to other projects, ” concluded Smith.

The construction and the challenges

Construction of the Jeddah Tower has already begun and, according to information from The Verge website, is on the 26th floor. However, much work remains ahead as the final design foresees 200 floors in total. The tower project is expected to have a total cost of $ 1.23 billion and will include several developments, such as offices, apartments and a luxury hotel company "Four Seasons".

The incredible view of the Red Sea is also a striking feature of the future “tallest building in the world, ” and it is precisely because of its location near the famous Gulf of the Indian Ocean that the work becomes even more complex and challenging. Due to the salt water and high winds in the region, the building needed to have a unique angular shape for wind shielding, as well as foundations with more than 200 meters.
