'Bride of Salt' honors story of woman possessed by evil spirit
In 2014, Israeli artist Sigalit Landau plunged a dress into the Dead Sea.
Its waters are rich in salt.
During the last two years, Sigalit has taken photographs of the dress under the sea
The idea was to show the evolution that the piece would have exposed in an unusual condition
His idea was to make an exhibition titled “Bride of Salt”, which would show the result of his experience.
Photos were captured every three months
The inspiration came through the play “The Dibuk - Between Two Worlds” by the Belorussian playwright Sch. An-Ski, 1916
The story tells about a Jewish woman who is possessed by the spirit of her late lover.
The Sunken Dead Sea outfit is a replica of the one worn during the staging of the play in 1920
In the story, the woman suffers an exorcism to get rid of the evil spirit
Over time, the dress turned into a work in which only the salt encrusted
Symbolically, Sigalit was able to transform a mourning dress into a curiously festive outfit
“It looks like snow, sugar and the embrace of death, ” the Israeli artist described of her work.
