UN reveals the main weapons of homicide

The United Nations has released a report showing that 4 out of 10 homicides around the world were committed with firearms - something that should not be that surprising. Most striking, however, is when we view the world in a segmented way: in the Americas, firearms account for 66% of crimes, while in Europe this rate drops to only 13%!

Much of this result comes from the release of firearms in the United States, which is the world leader in the segment. There are 112.6 weapons for each group of 100 inhabitants. That's right: the amount of weapons has already surpassed the population of this country! For comparison, Yemen is second, with “only” 54.8 guns per 100 people.

Although the study indicates that there is indeed a causal relationship between the availability of weapons and the number of homicides, the UN warns that it is not entirely conclusive. The survey also shows that the majority of crimes (55%) in Oceania are committed by stabbing and that 54% of homicides in Europe have other “agents” such as poisoning, strangulation and impact crimes.
