Big luck: archaeologists find pot full of gold coins in Italy

Do you know that story of finding a buried pot of gold? This really happened, but it was not necessarily a pot but an amphora: in the small town of Como, 625 km from Rome, Italy, archaeologists found the container filled with priceless coins!

"We still do not know in detail the historical and cultural significance of this discovery, but this area is a treasure trove for our archeology, " explained Culture Minister Alberto Bonisoli. The two-strap amphora was found under an ancient theater in the north of the country and carried coins dating from the 5th century, during the decline of the Roman Empire.

Amphora was found in old theater basement

So far, it is not known exactly how many coins are in the amphora, as archaeologists are working carefully not to damage the ceramic piece. According to historians who have analyzed the discovery, this is an unparalleled finding given the preservation of buried treasure.

The coin-filled amphora was discovered on Wednesday (5) and is already in Milan, 50 km from Como, for further investigation. “We need to do a stratigraphic archaeological survey one by one to understand what is inside and if everything belongs at the same time, ” explained Superintendent Luca Rinaldi, who leads the excavations under the theater.
