A US study by the Center for Science of Public Interest found that Coca-Cola cans sold in Brazil have the highest rates of 4-methyl-imidazole (4-MI), an excess substance that could even result. in cancer.

In Brazilian soft drinks, the value found was 267 mg of 4-MI for each 355 mL of drink. The number is higher than those found in soft drinks from other countries. In Kenya, the value found was 177 mg; in Canada, 160 mg; in the United Arab Emirates, 155 mg; in the United States, 144 mg; and in China, 56 mg.

Although the number is the highest, the value found in Brazilian beverages is below the maximum limit allowed by Anvisa. According to information released by Coca-Cola earlier this year, for a person at risk of developing cancer due to the substance, it would need to ingest at least a thousand cans a day.
