Wineleather: Meet the vegan and innovative version of wine-based leather

It's no surprise that eco-friendly leather options are produced for less environmental impact, and a novelty created by Italian designer Gianpietro Tessitore has everything to please anyone who cares about this issue and even adopts a vegan lifestyle.

Titled Wineleather, the material produced by the designer is made from what is left of wine production. In Italy, which is the largest wine-producing country in the world, 7 billion kilograms of grape marc are thrown away each year.

With this same amount of organic waste, Tessitore, according to a publication by Marcelo Copello in Veja Rio, would be able to produce three million meters of wine leather which, besides everything, has a very attractive and different color.

The news was so successful that, because of it, Wineleather won the 2017 Global Change Award, which helped its material to become internationally known. “This is an important award that propels us into the fashion world with great force. It is a great pleasure for me to have created a new Made in Italy material representing two major Italian excellence: fashion and wine, ”said Tessitore, in a statement published in Copello's column.

The product developed by the Italian is part of the Vegea brand, which also plans to use the material to cover furniture and upholstery, according to Ana Beatriz Bartolo, from Casa Claudia.

Research into the production of ecological material based on grape marc began in 2014, with the intention of meeting the demand for products that are not made with animal cruelty. After discovering that the leftovers of wine production had fibers that could create a material similar to leather, the synthetic version began to be produced.

The wine leather manufacturing process consists of dehydrating the grape marc and adding oils until the material can go through a process that leaves it in the proper texture for use. And you, what did you think of this idea? Tell us in the comments!
