The animals were born on July 15, and were named after Mei Lun and Mei Huan. Incidentally, the two are the first giant panda twins to be born and survive in the US, and were conceived through artificial insemination. According to the Atlanta zoo staff, Mei Lun and Mei Huan are developing well and growing fast, and are currently learning to get around.

Giant pandas are native to China and are endangered animals. They can only be found in some isolated mountainous areas of the south-central region of the country and, according to the Daily Mail, it is estimated that only 1600 still exist in the wild. About 300 specimens are held captive, most of them in China.
