6 abandoned prisons that cause goose bumps
If I were to pick some places to enjoy a climate of terror, no doubt the abandoned prisons would be on the list - second only to forgotten psychiatric hospitals, of course. These places hold many memories and stories that few people know, becoming buildings full of mystery.
Meet six of them:
1. The prison on the island of Procida in Italy was built in 1563 to be a castle. It was not until 1815 that the place was transformed into a prison, which remained in operation until 1988.
2. This is a penitentiary opened in 1829 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It has been closed for 45 years. Famous smuggler Al Capone was detained here
3. Also located in Philadelphia, Holmesburg Prison was closed in 1995 and served as a testing site for pharmaceutical biochemical weapons
4. The Tennessee State Prison was opened in 1898 and has been closed since 1992.
5. Between 1949 and 1956, Croatia's Goli Otok Island was transformed into a high-security prison for political prisoners of the Yugoslav government.
6. It may not seem like it, but this prison was only deactivated in 2006. Located in Russia, it has a dark look beyond it.
