Crater reveals one of the meteorite crash sites in Russia

According to people at the Gizmodo site, Russian authorities say they have found the locations hit by some of the meteorite fragments that crashed yesterday in the Chelyabinsk region of Russia's Ural Mountains.

So far, according to the publication, three craters have been found, two near Lake Cherbakul - one of which is shown in the image above - and the third in the town of Zlatoust, which is 80 kilometers from Chelyabinsk. According to information published by RIANOVOSTI, the Russian news agency, the meteorite traveled at a speed of 30 kilometers per second, and the number of injured rose to 1, 200.

Estimates by Russian researchers indicated that the object weighed about 10, 000 tons, and it probably disintegrated between 30 and 50 kilometers from the surface. In addition, Russian space agency Roscosmos has stated that the impact by the meteorite bears no relation to the asteroid 2012 DA14 passing through Earth.
