Nestlé executives made a frightening revelation: If the whole world had the same eating habits as Americans, the fresh water on the planet would have run out 15 years ago! But this is only a matter of time, as other countries are on the same path as the US in terms of food.
It turns out that Americans are some of the most meat-eating people on earth. The detail is that meat production needs millions of liters of water, because we must first irrigate the corn and soybean crops that feed the animals that will be slaughtered and will reach people's tables.
That information was in the secret report titled "Nestlé Survey: Forget the Global Financial Crisis, the World is Running Out of Drinking Water, " which was leaked by WikiLeaks. The document points out that the course of the planet seems to be catastrophic - it would be much better if we fed the corn and soybeans that are served to animals.
A future like “Mad Max”
Ultra-populous countries such as India and China are increasingly consuming meat, according to the Nestlé report. This will lead to a water crisis that is expected to affect 1/3 of the world's population by 2025, reaching extremely alarming levels by 2050.
According to the survey, annually it would be possible to remove 12, 500 cubic kilometers of water from Earth for food. By 2008, we were already taking half that amount, which was enough to provide an average of 2, 500 calories a day for the then 6.7 billion people on the planet.
In the US, however, the average daily calorie intake rises to 3, 500 per person - much of it comes from carnivorous eating. If the whole world had followed this pattern, the world's fresh water would have been depleted by the year 2000. Since by 2050 it is estimated that we will be 9 billion people, we need to rethink - and a lot - our eating habits now.
