Tense: Giant iceberg puts village on tsunami warning in Greenland

Icebergs are not what we can call new in Greenland - so much so that a few days ago we even shared here at Mega Curious stunning images of one of those ice blocks breaking from a glacier and entering the ocean. However, although the islanders are accustomed to seeing these structures, the recent emergence of one of them has put a village on alert for tsunami and has even forced some evacuations.

Danger warning

The iceberg "appeared" last week, and on Thursday was just 100 meters away from the village of Innaarsuit, which is on the northwest coast of the island. It is estimated that the ice floe weighs between 8 and 10 million tonnes and measures over 90 meters in height from the water level!

The problem is that, since the iceberg is very close to the coast, if it starts to fragment, the pieces can generate waves that in turn can flood the community. By the way, someone caught a video where a little piece of the ice floe comes loose and falls into the sea - and here's what happened:

Have you ever wondered if a larger fragment comes off and falls at a different angle into the sea? Tense, right? This is the largest iceberg ever spotted in the village of Innaarsuit, which has a population of 169 residents - yes, it's a very small community.

As far as it was reported, more than 30 inhabitants have already been evacuated to places farther from the coast, and the good news is that over the weekend, the iceberg eventually drifted a little further away from the village, but the risk that the bloc will The ice is still destabilizing - and losing large chunks - is still quite large, so Innaarsuit remains on tsunami alert.

The danger, in fact, is quite real in Greenland, as just over a year ago at least 11 homes were completely destroyed and four people lost their lives when a landslide triggered a giant wave. Watch below:
