Pirate HUE: Luffy is from Brazil! Author reveals countries of heroes of One Piece

With nearly 20 years on the road, One Piece is a smash hit franchise. The adventure of the charismatic band of pirates seems to have captured a loyal following worldwide, whether in manga, anime, games and a multitude of related products. Longtime fans know that Eiichiro Oda's work is full of homage and references to the real world and pop culture - even for Michael Jackson. But did you know that the protagonist, Luffy, may have more to do with Brazil than you thought?

Known for the hilarious answers in the questions and answers section of his comic, the author has been questioned for some time by a Japanese reader about which country the Straw Hat Pirates would be if the story were set in the real world. Oda, of course, joked and confirmed that, in one way or another, each of the characters has a certain image or personality that makes it possible to associate them with a certain nationality.

Despite some expected choices - yes, we're looking at you, Sanji and Franky - the designer surprised virtually everyone by saying that the great hero of the adventure would be a Brazilian gem if made from flesh and blood. Although it may seem strange at first, it even makes sense if you take into account that Monkey D. Luffy has a contagious joy, is very receptive to everyone, has the typical "never give up" style and is very flexible - in the literal sense of the word.

Do you think you can guess where each of them would come from if the One Piece search was done on our dear planet? Then place your bets and check out the full list below:

1) Luffy (Brazil)

2) Zoro (Japan)

3) Nami (Sweden)

4) Sanji (France)

5) Usopp (Africa)

6) Chopper (Canada)

7) Robin (Russia)

8) Franky (United States)

9) Brook (Austria)

So, was it within what you expected? Did anyone imagine the kind Chopper coming from a country other than Canada? There are those who are wringing their nose at Brazil's home country as Luffy's homeland, as they are supposed to be from some British family. Well, what matters is that officially, the boy is a pure brother "HUE"! Ah, it's worth noting that even though Oda has labeled Africa as the cradle of bustling Usopp, the term refers to a continent rather than a country, okay?
