Penis transplant will arrive in the Americas in 2016

Last year, the world's first penile transplant was performed in South Africa. It was estimated that within two years the organ implanted in a boy who lost the "original" in an unsuccessful circumcision would resume normal functioning. However, two months later the guy had managed to get his wife pregnant.

In 2015, it was Scottish turn to rediscover a meaning for life after 37 years without his "instrument". As a child he was incapacitated after being run over and dragged for over 200 meters. The surgery was done in England and now he hopes, finally, to be able to have a more normal and trauma free life.

Now the news will come to the USA: in 2016 the country will perform the first penile transplant in the country. A war veteran who lost his penis in a bomb blast in Afghanistan will be the first American to go through the still unprecedented procedure in the Americas.

Soldier who had his private parts injured in an explosion in Afghanistan will be the first US patient to undergo penile transplantation in the United States.

Costs and beneficiaries

The surgery will be led by researchers at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and will not cost the patient. However, if the transplant is successful, it could become a routine at the university hospital and will cost between $ 200, 000 and $ 400, 000 - somewhere between $ 752, 000 and $ 1.5 million. The operation should last 12 hours.

For the time being, however, the treatment will be aimed only at US war veterans who have suffered injuries to their genitals while defending the country in the conflicts in which it is involved. According to the US Department of Defense, more than 1, 300 men are in this condition, with trauma data from 2001 to 2013.

"These genitourinary injuries are not things we hear often, but they are as devastating as any injuries our warriors suffer, " explained Andrew Lee, president of plastic and reconstructive surgery at Johns Hopkins University.
