Shanghai to have luxury hotel built in abandoned quarry

According to a report posted on Haute Living, English engineering firm Atkins is working on a luxury hotel construction project in an abandoned quarry in Shanghai, China, at the request of the Shimao real estate development group.

The hotel, which is to be built on one of the side walls of the Tianmashan quarry, will feature 380 rooms spread over 19 floors, three of which will be above the level of the quarry. In addition, the structure will feature a sunken restaurant, a gym with water sports options and an aquarium just under 10 meters deep. And, being located between the walls of a mountain, the hotel will also offer extreme sports such as rock climbing and bungee jumping.

The complex, due to open in 2014 or 2015, is part of a larger project to build a giant theme park called Shimao Shanghai Wonderland.
